Things to Come [12A] 102 mins subtitled Award-winning director Mia Hansen-Løve’s film is a contemplative portrait of womanhood – and an irresistible collaboration between the filmmaker and the legendary actor Isabelle Huppert (The Piano Teacher, White Material, Amour). Nathalie is married with two children, dividing her time between her family, former students and her eccentric mother, leading a life of personal and intellectual fulfilment. Unexpectedly, Nathalie’s husband announces he is leaving her for another woman. With an newfound freedom suddenly thrust upon her, Nathalie must reinvent herself and establish a new way of living. Featuring a remarkable performance from Huppert, Things to Come is an intelligent, poetic and naturalistic exploration of one woman’s pursuit of happiness.

Ron Howard’s not-to-be-missed story of the band’s exceptional touring years is an intimate portrait of the band and a behind-the-scenes look at The Beatles on tour. Exploring the effect it had on their relationships, as well as their musical evolution, and looking at how they transformed the world of music, the film features interviews, unheard music and exclusive concert footage from the biggest band of all time.
Captain Fantastic [15] 119 mins Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen), his wife Leslie and their six children live deep in the wilderness of Washington state. Isolated from society, Ben and Leslie devote their existence to raising their children – educating them to think critically, training them to be physically fit and guiding them in the wild without technology. But when Leslie dies suddenly, Ben must take his sheltered offspring into the outside world for the first time. The result is a film that is beautiful, moving (but never mawkish), funny and highly recommended. Winner of the Un Certain Regard directing prize at Cannes Film Festival this year, directed by Matt Ross and also starring George McKay, Kathryn Hahn and Frank Langella.

Norma LIVE: Monday September 26 at 7:15pm This new production of Norma for The Royal Opera is distinguished by a superlative cast of internationally renowned singers. Bellini’s classic bel canto opera is full of wonderful melodies and opportunities for star singing. But it is especially known for Norma’s stunning showpiece aria, ‘Casta diva’. Àlex Ollé of innovative Catalan theatre group La Fura dels Baus directs, bringing a modern edge to this timeless tale of love, rivalry and betrayal. Conducted by Antonio Pappano and starring Joseph Calleja and Sonia Ganassi.
Cymbeline LIVE: Wednesday September 28 at 7pm Screening live from Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s rarely performed tragicomic romance is directed by Melly Still who designed Tales from Ovid and Midnight’s Children for the RSC. Melly directs Gillian Bevan in the role of Cymbeline, the first woman to take on the role for the RSC, and Bethan Cullinane as Imogen. Cymbeline is Shakespeare’s coming of age tragicomic romance. A story of power, sexuality and identity – stunningly retold for the 21st century. Running time approximately 210 minutes including an interval.

Mozart’s classic opera Così Fan Tutte puts two pairs of lovers to the test – with great music but distinctly unexpected results. For this new production, director Jan Philipp Gloger creates a richly theatrical world as the playground for this quirky comedy, where two men try to woo each other’s partners for a bet. This lively, youthful and imaginative take on one of the world’s best-loved operas is conducted by Semyon Bychkov and stars Daniel Behle, Alessio Arduini, Johannes Martin Kränzle, Corinne Winters, Angela Brower and Sabina Puértolas.
