Jazz in the sun on the outdoor stage at last year’s Wipers musical performance

Last Sunday evening, August 7, was a great music night in the Ypres Castle Inn at the Gun Garden – but this coming Saturday and Sunday, August 13 and 14, should be even better as the outdoor stage returns to the pub’s garden for three consecutive August weekends.

You can eat outdoors in the garden with stunning views towards Rye Harbour and listen to the bands for the next three weekends during the afternoons (3pm-5pm) and evenings (6pm-8pm) – or listen to music indoors on Friday for the rest of the year (from 9:30pm) and Sunday (from 7pm) – but during August, while the outdoor stage is in place, the Friday evening bands will be only at 9:30pm.

[However the stage does not arrive until Saturday lunchtime so there is a question mark against the afternoon gig (Jamie Smart) being outside, but the evening performance definitely should be. The evening performances outside will end earlier than last year because of complaints from nearby residents. Editor]

Last Sunday evening we were entertained by Carl Burgess and The Roosters, a five piece live act popular in bars and pubs in South East England, and all of the musicians were multi talented, switching between different instruments, mandolin, acoustic, electrics, harmonicas, part harmonies and banter of varying quality.

Carl Burgess who is the front man of the band was joined by Steve Alexander, Bob Longridge, Richard Studholme and Bob Loveday. Great music which we all enjoyed. Any further information go to google: Carl Burgess and The Roosters.

The Ypres Castle Inn has several bands playing this month. August 13 from 3pm to 5pm will be lovely singer/guitarist Jamie Smart, and on the same day from 6pm until 8pm will be Phil Law, Reg Marchant and Steve Stone. On Saturday August 20 from 3pm to 5pm the Turpin Hubbard Trio will play and from 6pm until 8pm Phil Trainer will perform.

The final August Bank Holiday weekend is a three day event with the Force 10 Big Band on Saturday (3:30pm-7:30pm), Yoka and Big Ray (3pm-5pm) and Lipsticks and Beatniks (6pm-8pm) on the Sunday – and finishing up with The Rockitmen on Bank Holiday Monday from 4pm-7pm.

There are more music dates and further information can be found on the pub’s website www.yprescastle.co.uk
