On June 18, Rye members of the Wall of Sound singing ensemble, under their musical director, local resident Sandra Scott, joined London members of the choir at the Royal Hippodrome, Eastbourne, as the backing group for the well known, award winning male vocal group Blake The choir had its own slot on the bill, singing a version of Gershwin’s Summertime. Other songs included Moon River, In Paradisum, Nessun Dorma, You’ll Never Walk Alone and Vide Cor Meum, ending with a rousing Jerusalem.
The next day, after breakfast at Café Zara, in Rye, some members of the choir walked to Iden, where they sang The Rose and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah in All Saints Church, for a group of local residents, which included John Smith, a long time resident, who has over many years has done a great deal for the village and who was moving from the area the following day. Then they walked back to Rye for late lunch at the Globe Inn.
The choir, which practices locally on Thursday evenings, is on the look out for new members in Rye, especially just now for sopranos. Its repertoire ranges from classical to folk and through its harmonies, all created by Sandra, is developing its own distinctive sound.
