New food waste bins are continuing to be delivered around Rye, with food collections due to start in the spring.

The grey containers with an orange lid, along with a smaller food caddy, are being distributed across the Rother, Hastings and Wealden districts in East Sussex as part of the new initiative.

“All households will get one caddy for inside the home to empty your food scraps into,” said a spokesperson for Rother District Council. “Plus a larger outdoor bin for emptying into once the caddy is full – this is what will be collected on a weekly basis. All uneaten food and plate scrapings can go into the bins and will be collected by Biffa, the council’s waste management service each week.”

Details of when the new service will begin will be given out. All councils are required to offer weekly food collections from April 2026, said the council spokesperson. “We are required to provide every household with the service. Food waste makes up about 30% of the average household bin and can be easily recycled including all uneaten food and plate scrapings, meat bones, tea bags, coffee grounds and fruit cores.”

The winner of a competition to to name the new food waste collection vehicles has been announced. William the Composter came out top, alongside names which also include: SpongeBob Scrapants, Sir-eats-a lot, The Very Hungry Caddy-Filler, and Peels on Wheels.
