Energy bills rising. Grid outages increasing. Planning systems blocking the homes we need. What if the answer isn’t waiting for government — but building something better ourselves? A talk in the Rye Community Garden on Tuesday 26 May looks to explore the idea.
Nick Rosen — author, filmmaker, and founder of off-grid.net — has spent two decades showing how off-grid technology isn’t just for hermits and homesteaders. It’s a practical, scalable response to the housing crisis, the energy crisis and the climate crisis, all at once.
Off-grid.net, launched in 2006, has grown into the UK’s leading community for people who want to cut costs, cut carbon, and take back control — whether they live in a city flat or a rural smallholding. Modern battery storage means you no longer need a 24/7 grid connection. You just need the right knowledge and the right neighbours.
The focus is on enabling those who live on the grid to benefit from off-grid technology, and incorporate that into their lives in ways which save energy, money and carbon. With modern battery technology there is no longer any need for a 24/7 energy supply. Off-Grid promotes many enterprises that are working for a sustainable future. It also campaigns on issues affecting people who live or work off-grid, including planning permission.
Nick will share what’s working, what’s possible, and how communities like ours in Rother can lead the way. This is a free public event — all welcome.
Bring an umbrella if it looks like rain.
