Five huge trucks have begun moving hundreds of tons of shingle along the coast between Rye Harbour and Pett Level. The Environment Agency convoy is working alongside bulldozers and excavators to shore up coastal protection.
Throughout the year longshore drift gradually moves shingle east along the coast, building up by the harbour wall and leaving other parts of the coast exposed.
In recent weeks, storms and high tides have washed away the stones protecting the Mary Stanford Lifeboat House in Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. The sea wall between Pett Level and Winchelsea Beach has also been exposed.
Both have now had their shingle protection strengthened.
The annual work by the Environment Agency also helps keep Rye Harbour and the River Rother open for navigation.
