This year Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has won #tripadvisortravellerschoice award for 2025 In a nutshell, this award means that the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has been recognised as being in the top ten percent of travellers’ destinations in the world, a wonderful recognition of the pleasure that the reserve gives to the many people who visit each year.

Arthur Sloman, visitor experience manager, commented: “Sussex Wildlife Trust is thrilled to win this award. People who know and love the reserve already understand what a special place it is for wildlife. Our stretch of coast is part of the largest area of vegetated shingle in the U.K; a rare and globally threatened habitat. It is home to over 4,500 species of plants and animals, including 300 that are rare or endangered.
“The addition of Rye Harbour Discovery Centre makes this nature reserve highly accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. Sussex Wildlife Trust welcomes 200,000 visitors to the Discovery Centre each year. It provides comfortable facilities with an opportunity to learn about the reserve from exhibition screens and interactive touch displays. Rain or shine you can find a place to rest with refreshments in front of a truly unbeatable view of the reserve. There aren’t many places that can offer locally-sourced gift items with freshly-made coffee and a front row seat watching Spoonbills and Little Terns.
“What’s most important is that people who live locally to Rye feel a sense of belonging with the nature reserve. It’s a place you can visit at any time and find relaxation through connecting with nature. Sussex Wildlife Trust works closely with neighbouring charities and community groups to ensure that everyone gets an opportunity to benefit from this incredible nature reserve. Many thanks indeed!”

Has it occured to the wildlife trust that rather than using the noisy, smelly, polluting jeep-type vehicles we locals currently witness your staff use (at all points around the site), it would be more ecologically sound and a more pleasant experience for locals and visitors alike to return to the time, in the very recent past, when the warden used a push-bike to get around the reserve? It’s the thin edge of the wedge, we can see.
What about a nice clean electric vehicle, would please everyone I’m sure
