Nationwide says it is guaranteeing that it will continue to keep a branch in Rye until at least 2030.

The new commitment extends its “Branch Promise” by two years in the face of closures elsewhere. The building society office on Rye High Street is open three days a week.

Rye is one of 43 towns in the south east of England where Nationwide is the last remaining bank.

According to Nationwide, in towns where it is the sole bank, current account openings have risen by almost a third over the last year and cashpoint usage has increased by a quarter. There was also a 96 per cent increase for non-Nationwide customers using in-branch ATMs.

Dame Debbie Crosbie DBE, Group Chief Executive at Nationwide, said, “Our customers can be confident that they can bank with us whichever way they choose. Branches are important to our customers, to communities and to the health of our high streets. That’s why Nationwide will continue to keep branches open in addition to our investment in online and telephone channels.”

  1. Although you can bank on them, Nationwide isn’t a bank! Never has been. It is a mutual – a building society owned by its members.
