Buddleia returns to Landgate

A number of members of the Rye Conservation Society (RCS) have raised their concerns that foliage has again appeared on The Landgate. It is only a year since Rother District Council (RDC) cleaned the structure and supposedly removed the weeds, and their roots, but since then a vigorous clump of buddleia is again growing from its parapet and weeds down its walls.

The RCS have drawn this to the attention of Rother councillors and informed its members that the Mayor of Rye, Michael Boyd, is “very keen to promote fundraising with the Society and others to protect the Landgate, to fix the clock and restore the lighting”.

Rye News readers will remember that after pressure from local residents, RDC set up a forum of stakeholders to discuss and agree a plan for the ancient monument. The forum was to include representatives from RDC, Rye Town Council, Rye Museum and Rye Conservation Society. At the time of writing it is not clear whether the forum has met, or produced a plan of action, to protect the Landgate arch.
