Council to select its own members

Rye Town Council is advertising two vacancies for new councillors. Official notice of these vacancies and the procedure for filling them can be found on the council website.

The vacancies occur following the resignations of councillors Ian Potter and Sam Wood. For details of the co-option procedure, and to apply, please email richard.farhall@ryetowncouncil.gov.uk. The deadline for applications is midnight on Tuesday March 29.

These will then be considered at a special meeting to be held on Tuesday, April 19, when candidates will be given the opportunity to speak in support of their application for up to three minutes, and should be prepared to answer up to three questions.

There had been no requests for a by-election in response to notices published on both town hall notice boards, as well as on the council website and on social media channels, Facebook and Instagram. Co-option can be seen as a democratic alternative insofar as nominations are sought from the electorate, and it is certainly a cheaper option as a formal by-election costs in the region of £4,000 of council tax payers money.
