A trip up and down the river was a highlight of the Rye and District Chamber of Commerce Summer Social held at Rye Harbour Sailing Club on Wednesday 24 June. It was a relaxing start to the evening, which also included discussion about the chamber’s future, concerns about crime and the potential of loyalty cards for Rye’s shoppers.

Representatives from local businesses were able to enjoy the river cruise thanks to Rye Harbour Sea Safari and Boat Trips. During the 45-minute trip from the harbour to the town centre there were fantastic views of Rye and sightings of seals and wildlife on the Rother.

Recent issues of vandalism, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour in the town centre were brought up as part of a new Safer Rye group formed by local businesses. Plans are being put in place for further meetings, to include Sussex Police and local agencies.

The team behind the TN Card, a loyalty scheme running successfully in Tunbridge Wells and West Kent, explained how their reward scheme worked for local businesses. By joining for a fee, TN Card members are able to enjoy discounts and offers in local stores.

The future of Rye Chamber continues to be uncertain. The Summer Social heard that unless new leaders came forward the organisation could face being wound up later in the summer, possibly as soon as a meeting in August. Current chair Jane Brook and vice-chair Sarah Broadbent announced they would be standing down at a meeting of the chamber earlier in the year.
