Three fire appliances were called out to a fire in Mermaid Street at around 3:30pm on Friday September 22, writes Kenneth Bird. Apparently, a shaving mirror had reflected the sun’s rays on to a window curtain at the front of the house, facing the street. The flames were quickly extinguished and smoke extraction used to clear the fumes and smoke. The house, named Robin Hill, is down and across the street from the Mermaid Inn. No damage was caused to adjacent properties.
