Former nightclub wins award

Rye Conservation Society is to recognize the redevelopment of the Oasis at this year’s AGM on Friday May 17 at 11am. All members are invited and visitors are welcome. The meeting will be followed by the annual luncheon for members and guests at the Mermaid Inn.

At the AGM the society will make an award to Christian Burton of BBG Commercial Properties Ltd, developers of 48 Ferry Road, the old Oasis night club which many readers will remember as a lively venue on a Saturday night. Unfortunately business at the club had been declining for many years, but the society was very pleased that the building has been sympathetically converted into apartments and thereby given a new lease of life while retaining its external appearance and by revealing the original brickwork dating back to its days as a grain store.

48 Ferry Road follows previous society award winners including the Waterworks Micropub, the restored station box and the Hub on the Hill. Readers are welcome to submit ideas for future awards for good development/restoration of property in the town.

Following the normal business of committee reports and financial updates there should be ample time for discussion concerning conservation and planning and we have invited our local Rother councillors to report to the meeting.
