High street closures this month

Rye High Street will be closed to vehicle traffic for two separate periods this month.

Work on the long awaited gas connection to the George Hotel is now due to begin next Monday, March 7. Expected to last for up to four days this work was originally scheduled by SGN for February 1, but according to an SGN spokesperson there was apparently a failure of planning liaison and the road closure consent arrived too late.

The length of the roadway from Lion Street to West Street will be closed to vehicle traffic and a diversion put in place, the same as previously noted and illustrated in Rye News. The diversion takes traffic from the high street onto East Street and Market Street around Church Square onto West Street passing Lamb House then re-joining the high street. There is no appropriate diversion for HGVs, but smaller delivery vehicles should be able to use the diversionary route, says SGN. The letter also confirms that access for residents will be maintained.

For further information on these works, contact SGN customer services on 0800 912 1700. An East Sussex County Council (ESCC) spokesperson advises that the diversion may be clearer online.

Notice of a second road closure has just been received, this time for road repairs commencing March 28, and in operation for five nights between the hours of 8pm and 6am. We have previously been advised by Councillor Keith Glazier that the full repair of the carriageway cannot take place until the metal hoarding outside the George Hotel is removed.

Speaking yesterday to contract site manager Kevin Riley, no one has asked for confirmation that the hoarding will have been dismantled by the due date of March 28. As of now he would not be able to give such assurance. On checking with ESCC, we were advised that “the resurfacing work planned for Rye High Street from March 28 is dependent on the scaffolding being removed and we are working with the scaffolding company to ensure the road is free from obstructions. If the work needs to be delayed we will let people know as soon as possible and will continue to regularly monitor the road and carry out repairs where appropriate and necessary.”
