Rye was proud to celebrate St George in a special civic parade and church service on Sunday 26 April at St Mary’s, led by the Rector Paul White.

St George’s Day holds a special place within the Church of England, not simply as a national celebration, but as a deeply rooted religious observance. At its heart, the day honours Saint George, a Christian martyr believed to have died for his faith in the early fourth century. For the Church, this is the key point: George is venerated not because of legend, but because he represents steadfast Christian witness. He chose faith over fear.

The famous story of St George and the dragon is not treated as literal history by the Church, but as a powerful symbol. The dragon represents evil, injustice, or persecution; George represents moral courage and the triumph of good through faith.

St George’s importance also lies in the historic link between English identity and Christianity. As England’s patron saint, his day has long been a moment where faith and national story meet. In earlier centuries, it ranked alongside major religious festivals, reinforcing England as a Christian nation under God.

Colonel Anthony Kimber, President of Rye Royal British Legion said, “Led by the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Andrew Stuart and the Town Council, there were hundreds in St Mary’s, Rye on Sunday, keeping the tradition of marking St George’s day in Rye, which has been done for decades. It was particularly good to see so many young people from the Scouting and Guiding movements parading and proudly renewing their ‘promises’ in front of members of the Community. Rye Royal British Legion is always pleased to be able to coordinate the event for the town.”
