Saturday July 19 was the start of Rye Town FC pre-season, and the team travelled to Punnetts Town for a warm-up game. There was a strong start, Rye going 1- 0 up with a goal from Sammy Foulkes. Unfortunately, just before fifteen minutes had elapsed the game was abandoned because Sammy broke his leg, and an ambulance had to be called.
Sammy had surgery on Sunday and is home now. He will have a long road of recovery ahead. Rye Town FC has set up a go-fund me page to support him during this tough time as he is self-employed.

The team offers huge thanks to Punnetts Town FC and referee Scott Ramsay for their help and support for Sammy after his accident.
Sammy writes from his bed: “Rye Town Football Club has been my family for years and it showed on Saturday when I broke my leg in a ‘friendly’ game. Everyone has been amazing. I never thought that it would happen to me, breaking a leg and being in such a vulnerable headspace, but it did. You guys are so thoughtful and you’ve made me feel so optimistic about my health and getting on.”
Shane, manager of Rye Town FC has nothing but praise for Sammy. “The most liked and most loved player ever to wear a Rye Town shirt not only by fellow players or by management or supporters but opponents too. Sammy was one of the original players to play for Rye when we formed in 2016.
“Football ability wise the lad is one of, if not the best, natural player to play for the club. Full of spirit both footed supreme agility and fearless. He is a player that all young supporters and players want to be want to inspire to be like on a football pitch.
“He has the hearts of us all.
“With over 100 appearances for the club Sammy is in the top 5 for appearances overall for the club.
“A Rye Town legend and the most photographed member of the club!”
Sammy went to training on Wednesday night and received a hamper to cheer his recovery.
