Mayor’s update

We are making progress on trying to secure a sustainable future for Rye Leisure Centre and pool. On Tuesday, the mayor, deputy mayor, Councillor Gilbert and town clerk met with senior officers of Rother District Council to discuss how best to set up a local group to take on the running of the centre, so that it is truly community led and recognises the needs of parishioners, schools and visitors and can best cater for them.

In the evening the Rye Leisure Centre Community Working Group, made up of local experts and key stakeholders, met to discuss detailed plans of what due diligence is needed, over what period of time, before we can properly assess the risks and opportunities we are looking at. Fully understanding the structural integrity of the building and plant is key to this. I am grateful to all those who are giving up their time and valuable knowledge to get this moving. We are all aware of the difficulties that lie ahead, but there is a great will to make this happen. I will of course report back as soon as I can.

In other news, I was delighted to take part in Window Wanderland last weekend (March 25), organised by Arabella Ansar, that bought people to the streets of Rye, and also raised money for the Music Well, Hands of Hope and Heartsmart charities.

On Thursday, March 30 Rye Bay Crew sang at the Waterworks micro pub and we raised money for a local charity. The building was jam-packed and all had a jolly good evening.
