Lifeguards back

RNLI lifeguards Camber Sands

The RNLI lifeguards are back full-time on the beach at Camber Central from this Saturday, May 24. The charity’s lifeguards have been covering weekends and bank holidays until last week. Until the end of September, the service will be in operation seven days a week.

Camber West beach patrols go seven days a week from mid July.

Hugh Richardson, lead lifeguard supervisor for East Sussex, said: “RNLI lifeguards have to maintain a level of fitness, which allows them to swim 200m in under 3.5 minutes, and run 200m on sand in under 40 seconds. They undergo comprehensive training in areas such as casualty care, rescue watercraft operation, and the use of all-terrain vehicles. They are excited to be returning to Camber Sands, doing what they do best, offering preventative advice and an excellent lifesaving service.”

Much needed shelter

Celebrations to mark the new shelter’s opening

The long-awaited bus shelter has finally been installed on Sea Road in Winchelsea Beach.

Icklesham Parish Council secured £5,621 in match funding from East Sussex Highways for the new shelter and its installation. IPC also received a community grant from Rother District Council for £2,690.

A spokesperson for IPC thanked the donors for their financial support. “We are very aware of how many people use the bus in Winchelsea Beach and also how awful the driving rain can be here during the winter months. We hope that the new shelter will mean residents, including school children, can get to their final destination without getting soaked!”

Meanwhile IPC’s annual parish meeting takes place next week at Rye Harbour Village Hall –  7-8pm on Friday, May 30.
