Here’s a roundup of some of the other stories making the news in Rye this week.

Cup winners

Coach Alex Sarkies, Captain Darren Warne & Manager Shane Ridgers from Rye Town FC with the trophy

On Saturday April 27 Rye Town FC was presented with the East Sussex Football League Premier Division Trophy.

Manager Shane Ridgers said: “So proud of our squad of players that have contributed towards this success for the second season. Amazing group of people that work hard every week on the pitch and for each other.”

More landslips

Latest landslip on Military Road

There has been further damage to the cliffs along Military Road in Rye, more than two months since the first significant landslips this year. The latest is behind Curlew House.

Barriers on Military Road

Meanwhile work to prevent further landslips blocking the road at the site of February’s collapse has taken place. A concrete barrier has been erected.

Police election

Voting for the Sussex Police & Commissioner role has been taking place on Thursday May 2, however the result won’t be known until Sunday May 5. There are four candidates standing for the four year post. Ballot papers are being counted on Sunday, with the result expected sometime in the evening.

The candidates are Jamie Bennett (Liberal Democrat), Katy Bourne (Conservative), Jonathan Kent (Green) and Paul Richards (Labour).

There are also elections in Hastings, which may give an indication of voting in the Hastings & Rye constituency. Half the seats on the borough council are being contested.

Another first

Baptism ceremony at Rye Methodist Church

The first service of baptism has been held since Rye Methodist church members moved into St Mary’s Centre in September 2021. The Revd Philip Wagstaff conducted the service on Sunday April 24. Sandra Lanigan told Rye News: “Nova was a happy little girl on this wonderful occasion, which was full of joy and laughter. The sound of lusty hymn singing at the Sunday morning services at 10:30 often causes customers to the Kino to stop and listen, and even join in. Services are taken by a variable team of ministers and local preachers and occasionally the members put together their own service.”

Rail Strike

Ashford and Hastings bound trains depart Rye railway station

As Rye News went to press, next week’s rail strike is still on. There will be no trains on Southern or Southeastern on Tuesday May 7. Other rail companies are affected later in the week by the industrial action by rail union ASLEF. An overtime ban next week will also cause disruption from May 6-11.
