Rye’s public toilets are on the agenda for two important meetings next week.
On Monday 11 May Rye Town Council will discuss proposals for the Station Approach toilets as part of it’s meeting at the town hall. A working group has been developing proposals to take over the freehold of the building from Network Rail and secure funding for renovations.
A report to Council acknowledges the toilets are “in a very poor state of repair” and suggest four options – repainting or redeveloping the existing building, plus two ideas for demolishing the toilets and rebuilding.
The meeting at the town hall begins at 6.30pm and will be the first chaired by new Rye Mayor Chris Hoggart. The agenda also includes further discussion on the Rye Neighbourhood Plan and how councillors will represent Rye Town Council on public bodies and committees.
The same day, Rye’s public toilets will also be discussed by Rother District Council’s Cabinet, with a proposal to give twelve month leases to Rye Town Council to maintain and operate the Strand, Salts, Gun Garden and Station toilets. Rother says this is an “interim arrangement until the toilets are either devolved to the relevant Town Council or leased to a commercial operator.”
Almost a year ago Rother approved controversial plans to agree leases to three of the conveniences to be partly converted into coffee shops or a cycle hub.
Rye News will have reports on both meetings next week
