The rain ceased just in time for the Marsh Choir to kick off proceedings outside the George for the Rye Christmas extravaganza, late-night shopping. The huge crowd assembled and filled the High Street and were delighted as the choir entertained them with well-known melodies. Little did anyone know what was to happen next. The most wonderful vintage Bentley appeared driven by Sally Benny with two important passengers: Paul Goring, Rye’s very own well-loved town crier and, brandishing a whisk, Rosie, owner and chef at The Fig and at present appearing on MasterChef. Paul Goring gave a cry about the festivities to follow and then after a well-orchestrated count down Rosie switched the lights on the magnificent tree on the George’s balcony to huge cheers from the crowd.

Rosie said: “I was incredibly honoured to be asked to turn on the Christmas lights in our hometown, Rye. What a lovely evening, and it was great to see so many faces there showing support. Well done to all involved in creating Christmas in Rye for a fab evening.”

The shops in Rye had excelled themselves and there were festive culinary treats, many home-made, and delicious beverages.

Katie from the George said: “It was so heart-warming to see such a strong community spirit in Rye on Saturday. It was positive and uplifting and great to see the old traditions return. The shop-keepers said that they were thrilled with the footfall right up to 8pm. It was a really brilliant start to Christmas in Rye.”

These events never happen without hours of dedicated hard work and a huge thank you goes to Vickie and Fran from Simply Rye who worked tirelessly, supported by a team of helpers. Thank you also to Michael from Merchant & Mills (who also sponsored the Marsh Choir), Mikey from Hunter Jones and Jo from Ethel Loves Me  who were all part of the “traders committee” – and Katie and Alex (and team) from the George who sponsored the tree and had lovely festive nibbles for the crowds.

It was a wonderful night and the town of Rye was full of Christmas cheer.
