Damp end to the season

Last weekend proved a washout in a number of senses, as the weather, so often this summer was so wet. The monsoons of Thursday and Friday washed away both the 2nds game at home to Bexhill 2nds and a friendly on Sunday at home to Winchelsea.

The 1st XI game away to Brighton did go ahead after a fashion. A much depleted 1st XI travelled the 100 mile round trip in the rain, arriving to find puddles on the square and a plastic sheet protecting the wicket.

After an hour’s delay the umpire confirmed the game could go ahead. The square looked more like a saw mill than a cricket pitch. Rye lost the toss and were invited to survive on a pudding of a wicket. Rye were dismissed for 32. Brighton slogged it in 3 overs. A totally unsatisfactory afternoon, but Brighton achieved the 30 points needed to claim the league title. Rye finished 5th.

The planning now starts for the 2025 season, not only for playing cricket, but also increased responsibilities for the maintenance of the Cricket Salts. We will shortly be sharing the plans, once we receive confirmation from Rother as to the processes to be put in place after November 30 when the existing grounds contract is terminated.

We will be starting our junior autumn coaching sessions at Rye Sports Centre from Thursday, October 3. These are both hardball sessions. 6pm – 7pm for those in school years 4-6, and 7pm -8pm for those in school years 7/8/9. The cost is £50 for all eight sessions, To get involved contact Martin Blincow blincsfamily@aol.com.
