Petanque season closes with prizes

Comprising six leagues – four on a Tuesday evening and two on a Wednesday evening – the local petanque leagues incorporate a total of forty nine teams.

At the end of season presentation held at the Pipemakers Arms, Rye, thirty eight trophies were presented to top teams and top players and Tenterden Club won the Tuesday A league by just one point from the Rose & Crown, Old Romney.

The B league winners were Warren Inn, New Romney, with the two teams from the Varne Boat Club, Greatstone, being second and third. The Owl (formally the Green Owl), Camber, came out top of the C league with The White Hart, Newenden, being runners up.

The two teams from the Two Sawyers, Pett, took the honours in the D league with the B team having the top spot.

In Wednesday A league, The Black Horse, Telham, came out on top by the narrowest of margins from the Queens Head, Icklesham. Winning the B league was Tenterden Club C, and Rye Bay Caravan Park and Winchelsea Beach came runners up.

Collecting trophies for top men’s and top ladies’ players in each league were – Ladies: Christine Degendon, Rose & Crown, Beckley; Kirstie Elliott, Warren, New Romney; Ann Pointer, William the Conqueror, Rye Harbour: Judy Glazier, Queens Head, Icklesham; Thelma Lambert, Royal Oak, Whatlington, and Jody Pitmat, Rye Bay Caravan Park/ Winchelsea Beach.

The men’s top players were: Spencer Rolf, Rose & Crown; Old Romney, Nick Elliot, Warren, New Romney; Alex Mynard, White Hart, Newenden; Joe Phillips, Pub 31, Winchelsea Beach; Rob Newell, Black Horse, Telham, and John Brooker, Two Sawyers, Pett.

The White Dog Ewhurst Green, who were playing in the league for the first time, won a Beer Game trophy

In the Tuesday League Singles Competition, two Pub 31 players reached the final with Joe Phillips getting the better of Damian Pearson. Martin Pry, White Hart, took the honours from Rob Newell in the Wednesday singles competition.

Allan Pawson and Freddie Clark, Rye Harbour Social Club, won the Tuesday pairs competition with Brendan Doughty and Jacob Bourne, Cock Inn, Peasmarsh, being runners up.

The defending champions Andy Pettit and Maddie Mills, Queens Head, Icklesham, had to settle for the runners up after being beaten by Rob Newell and Steve Mortimore in the final.
