Friday, February 16 was a fun evening at the Hub on the Hill, a race night to raise funds for the Rye Harbour Sailability (RHS). It was well organised, the entrance fee including sausages and chips (veggi option too) as well as great raffle prizes. Paul was a good compare and explained the mechanism of betting and winning. The mood became more serious as the audience, choosing which race they wanted first. People queued to put in their bet, £1 for each horse. The atmosphere totally changed once the race started, each calling for their number horse to go faster, though of course it was a video on a large screen. A fun evening.

Sailability is the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) national programme to support and encourage people with disabilities to take up sailing, including autism, mild mobility issues, cerebral palsy, learning difficulties and mental health issues. Sailors enjoy the outdoors, feel freedom on the water, are active, learn new skills and build confidence. At each sailing event cakes, teas, and coffee is available to buy which creates the community spirit as people get to know each other. Sailing can have a positive and calming influence on all involved.

The RHS is a small but passionate registered charity, run entirely by volunteers. Launched in August 2017 in Rye Harbour, the charity aims to give people of all ages with disabilities the experience of having fun sailing with an experienced helmsman and crew in adapted dinghies.

There are three boats, one of them being a safety boat. The two dinghies are able to carry six people, usually made up of the helm, crew, two carers and two sailors. To sail, everyone has to become a member as they must be covered by the charity insurance. In the winter months, volunteers work in partnership with the Hub on Rye Hill putting on social events, for instance a quiz night, race nights and a popular Christmas lunch each year.

From April to October, the sailing season, the RHS holds two sailing days each month. The charity hires the facility of the Rye Harbour Sailing Club, which includes the storing of the boats. The club has disability access, toilets and shower. Rye Harbour Sailability is a close-knit team of volunteers who are all committed to making a difference in the lives of others. They are always looking for help from volunteers who have experience of sailing as well as a treasurer, willing to join the busy team.
