That winning feeling returns

With the positive attitude that attack is the only form of defense, Lydd Town undertook the long away trip to Bermondsey and came away with a two-goal victory.

Fielding an attacking line-up and with the pedal to the floor from the off, the ‘Lydders’ really took the game to Bermondsey with strikers Kenny Pogue, Luke Burdon and Tim Babington combining well with Tyler Sterling to cause loads of problems for the home defense.

Sterling, Burdon and Baker all saw shots narrowly miss their target as Lydd piled on the pressure. Pogue had a shot cleared off the line and what was perceived as a clear penalty shout for handball against Bermondsey, was turned away.

The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when a free kick was only half cleared and Ryan Philpott released a fierce drive that took a deflection to easily beat the Bermondsey keeper.

One became two just a few moments later when Luke Burdon found time to turn and release a 30-yard drive that almost burst the back of the net.

The second half saw chances for both sides but with Lydd easing off as full-time approached, the only action came as manager Mickey Doyle used the advantage to exercise substitutes Billy Robbins, Ollie Bussey, Calvin Sedenu, and Jack Price.

Doyle said after the match: “We lined up an attacking team and were at them from the start. We were aggressive, won the ball back in good areas and moved it well.  Kenny Pogue was excellent today and deserved a goal, and Luke Burdon scored a cracker which is what he does. We took our foot off the gas during the second half but I can’t grumble at a 2-0 win away from home.

“We needed that winning feeling back and will now look to carry it on.”
