The first team on Saturday, August 30 completed their home fixtures with a six wicket win over Crowhurst Park 1sts in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcera, a defeat that saw Crowhurst Park relegated. Rye had won the toss and invited the Park to bat. The Park’s innings never got going as Rye kept breaking partnerships. Tom Powell, with 29, top scored. For Rye, Shahrukh Khan led the attack with 5-35 off 8.3 overs. He was supported by Skipper Harry Smeed 3-25 and Craig Pierce 2-15.

Rye initially struggled as well at 24-4. However, Jackson Woodcock 52 not out and Luke Payton 37 not out, including three sixes, saw Rye to victory in the 31st over by six wickets. This Saturday, September 6, the firsts conclude their season away to Hailsham.

The 2nds travelled to Firle 1sts on Saturday, August 30 in need of a win. At firs,t Rye struggled as Firle went off like a T20 scoring at six an over. However, Rye got a grip back on the game with slow bowling. Ross Pierce 1-23 off 8 overs, Martin Blincow 2-29 off 8 and Ben Clifton 2-35. There were 3 run outs as Firle were dismissed for 174.

The weather looked ominous, and 20 overs was needed to record a completed game. Despite interruptions, Rye reached 139-2 off 30 overs, Mark Cook 53 not out, Spencer Fielding 46, as the rain curtailed the game but Rye won on faster run rate. This Saturday, September 6, Rye 2nds host Bexhill 2nds at the Rye Cricket Salts in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.

Charity cricket match in aid of St Michael’s Hospice

Stuart Baker reports:

A charity cricket match between Rye thirds and Icklesham in aid of St Michael’s Hospice (Hastings and Rother) took place at Icklesham last Saturday.

The match was 25 overs per side and and fortunately we did finish before the rain came in.

Rye won the match, scoring the runs required in the last over. Unfortunately, the inclement weather did deter tea under the tree, which has been a popular feature in past years.

An auction of cricket bats, paintings and golf balls raised several hundred pounds at the end of the match. It is estimated that £2000 was raised, once the figures are totalled up we will update.

St Michael’s give excellent end of life care for many and work closely with The Sarah Lee Trust and Macmillan nurses. If anybody has missed our previous advertising but would like give their support, please leave a comment or message.

We would like to thank our match sponsors who contributed £175; Kevin Jury for sponsoring the ball; those that donated raffle prizes and the people that sold the raffle tickets; those that donated sandwiches and cakes  for the tea; David Mayne for scoring; James Peace and Stuart Baker for umpiring.

Finally, thanks to Tony and Sally Thorne and their family, for their post match hospitality.

Following Saturday’s fixtures Rye is holding its Presentation Evening at 7.00pm for the junior section followed by a BBQ and at 8.00pm the senior presentation followed by a BBQ. The club will be reflecting on a very successful season.
