Charitable endeavours

As Martello Developments Ltd seem to have such an abiding interest in the betterment of Rye life – the arts, totally restructuring the waterfront, new luxury flats, etc., etc. – perhaps they could contribute to the general welfare of Rye residents by donating, free and clear, a full instalment of appropriate solar heating for the community pool?

I believe that the owner/s of Martello Developments pride themselves on their charitable endeavours and organisations.

If keeping, as many have argued here, what is an essential means of maintaining health and well-being for all ages in Rye, surely this could be a perfect contribution from a company and its associates that are so clearly committed to Rye.

[If there are legalities that would not permit such an act of generosity, I trust that someone reading this could comment, please! I am no expert!]

  1. What an absolutely brilliant suggestion. There are hundreds of people in town who benefitted so much from the pool and the freedom and wellbeing it offered them. Especially in these difficult times when it’s so expensive just to feed yourself and keep warm at home. It would certainly be a massive credit to Martello if they took this on. Over to you Martello..!!

  2. It is very heartening to read Janet’s positive response. The suggested investment in the community of Rye would arguably yield a very great deal of social capital – common good for common purpose. The Martello declaration that it is ‘investing in the historic Cinque Port town of Rye’ has much meaning in this context. A town is surely much, much more than bricks laid up into walls of homes, businesses, places of worship, learning. etc.. Is it not at heart the everyday lives of the people who inhabit these places that really make a ‘town’?

The people of Rye are crying out in every way they can to re-establish a much needed swimming pool. The organisation in question whose goal it is to ‘invest’ in the historic town of Rye could certainly make a most significant and extremely beneficial investment to re-vitalise the pool in a vital and sustainable way. As Janet has written, ‘Over to you Martello..!!’

  3. Regarding the ongoing debate on Rye Swimming pool, I am under the Impression that the pool is locked into a contract, that doesn’t end till 2024.The same with the sports centre, and the funding from Rother District Council cannot be withdrawn, as there would be a penalty of £1.9 million to be paid back to Sports England. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

  4. Does this mean that the owners of the building cannot make improvements to the fabric of the building or the heating system etc. ? So in terms of doing anything that might significantly contribute to cutting costs related to heating the pool and sports centre, it is the contract holders to make this sort of investment in premises they don’t own?
