Two weeks ago Rye News asked for stories from Rye expats living abroad with their memories of home. We’ve had loads of replies, but the first into the inbox was from Patrick Pierce – literally an ex Pat. Here’s what he wrote.
My name is Pat Pierce, I immigrated to New Zealand in 2003.
I was born in Rye and lived in King’s Avenue.
It was a great place to grow up: skating on the bomb hole in the back field, bonfire nights in the middle field, chasing around the avenue, and many more.
I came back home in May and caught up with family and friends. It was great walking around Rye bringing back fond memories.
The age of the town is one thing that I miss about Rye. There is no history in NZ. I spent some time in the pubs around Rye and caught up with some of the locals – some I knew and some I didn’t but it was great catching up and chatting about the town.
As they say you can take the man out of Rye but you can’t take Rye out of the man!
If you’re reading Rye News in a far away country, get in touch. What’s your connection with Rye? Why is Rye so special to you? What do you love about our town and what do you miss when you’re back home?
Our email is info@ryenews.org.uk or leave a comment below and we’ll get in touch.
