A new group to help people living with dementia – and their families – starts at the Hub on Rye Hill on Monday February 24. The monthly Dementia Social Group will run monthly on the 4th Monday of the month from 2.45-3.45 and has been organised by Gracious Care and the Music Well. Coffee and cake will be provided.
Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of degenerative brain disorders. It affects the person with the diagnosis and importantly, it impacts their family and friendship groups. Not everyone will suffer dementia but in our lifetime, half of us will, which is a sobering statistic and one of the reasons why the Hub on Rye Hill are so passionate about increasing the understanding and awareness of the condition.
At the point of diagnosis it feels like entering a very dark and lonely place. The Dementia Social Group is for anyone with an interest in dementia. The experts from Gracious Care are on hand to offer practical help, advice about dealing with the decline of an individual and will work to dispel some of the myths which have built up.
The Music Well are a local group of musicians who have offered their time to make the hour go with a swing. They’ll lead sing-a-longs and perhaps there will be dancing on the patio on sunny days. As the sessions go on, they will tailor their activities to meet the needs of those attending, e.g. using memory books, arts and crafts to list a few.
The Hub has several separate spaces that can be used for discussions and advice in peace and quiet, not being disrupted by other activities. It’s been said before that dementia is a journey. The Hub on the Hill will be at your side when anyone needs help.

The statistic that half of us will get some form of dementia..that’s 50% . That sounds a high figure..which research has found this or predicted it. Is it Britain or a world wide suggestion.
After the patient participation group’s meeting on Dementia by Dr Mucci last year..there were many ways that she told us to improve our health so to increase our chances of not developing some Demencia symptoms…
Yes, as I recall, the main way to boost one’s chance of not getting dementia (according to Dr Mucci) is to stop drinking alcohol, as every drink one has shrinks one’s brain! She also advised people to maintain a sensible weight, eat healthy food – including 50g of protein a day – and exercise regularly. Learning new skills is another way to help protect our brains from cognitive decline.
Another much needed health focused support / social group for Rye and surrounding villages.
based at Hub on Rye Hill.
Well done to everyone for organising this group.
May I suggest that posters are put in Rye Medical Centre, Ferry Road Clinic, Rye Library for those who do not receive Rye News.
