The New Inn Winchelsea was buzzing on Sunday evening, May 18 with people and the sound of shanties being sung by the Rye Harbour Herrings, who had recently been showcased on the Mary Berry Christmas Makes.
Singing brings people together; the choruses were rousing and many joined in. Everyone was having fun but there was a serious reason why this event was taking place. The New Inn prides itself in running successful events for charity, of which this was one. Debbie, the wife of the mayor of Winchelsea, has chosen the charity Demelza for this, her second year in office, as it is close to her heart.

Debbie sent this message: “A good time was had on Sunday, May 18 at the New Inn Winchelsea when the fantastic Rye Bay Herrings performed a great selection of sea shanties. Lots of audience participation was encouraged by Martin Bruce and the team. Enormous fun and the generous audience donated £218 for the Demelza Children’s Charity. Thank you Martin and the Herrings, Debbie and Paul Ramsey for hosting the evening at the New Inn and all those who donated to this very worthy cause.”
Demelza Hospice Care for Children, more commonly referred to simply as Demelza, is a children’s hospice and a registered charity based in Kent, delivering clinical care and emotional support to babies, children and young people facing serious or life-limiting conditions throughout Kent, South East London and East Sussex.
At Demelza, staff are passionate about every individual in their care. They seek to create an environment that supports them every step of the way and endeavour to bring compassion and understanding during the anxious times these families are going through.
The Rye Harbour Herrings were so good that Paul and Debbie at the New Inn have booked them for more gigs.
