Killer looks and cold cuts

“So far nobody has worked out who did it,” says Lawrence Wilson about Rye Players latest production Murder on the Catwalk. “We’ve had a few people joining us for rehearsals and they’ve been stunned when they find out.”

As well as writing the play, Lawrence also stars as Inspector Gaston Dejavu, the police officer charged with solving the crime set at a 1962 Paris Fashion Show.

“I’ve been in a few murder mysteries as an actor myself,” Lawrence says. “So I’ve written a play where everyone is a potential suspect and the audience gets the chance to discuss whodunnit. There’s a prize for whoever gets it right.”

Rather than rows of seats, the audience will be seated around tables, cabaret style, with a cold deli platter included in the price. Dressing up to add to the French fashion show vibe is also encouraged, with another prize for the best dressed.

“I didn’t write it to play the main character,” says Lawrence. “But our director Patricia Driver insisted I should do it anyway! Putting on the Inspector’s amazing costume feels good though and the suit is a great way of getting into character.”

He says it’s a comedy with some serious moments, showing off Rye Players at its best. “The whole team is incredibly talented. There’s something about the way Rye Players draws people in and brings lots of very different people together. Not just the actors on stage. Everyone is so supportive and I’m so happy to be part of it.”

The performance on 3 May is sold out, but tickets are still available for the two shows at Rye Community Centre on 8 and 9 May and can be booked by clicking here.
