Starting a new business is a leap filled with anxiety, worry and concern. Leaving the security of a guaranteed monthly income after years of it, is risky but a risk worth taking. While there’s a lot to learn, the rewards are immense.

A year ago, I made the conscious decision to leave the corporate world of the City of London. An opportunity arose, and my only thought was, “How can I make this work?” So, the London taxi journeyed down the A21 to Rye, and The Rye Chauffeur was born.

The year has been fantastic. Having a network of friends and businesses in Rye has been incredibly helpful. The Rye Chauffeur has been warmly embraced as a unique taxi and chauffeur service. Residents and visitors alike have discovered the benefits of a truly exceptional, reliable service that matches the quality of the restaurants and accommodation, which the town’s residents deserve.

The year has offered a diverse range of clients, events and opportunities. The Rye Chauffeur isn’t just an A to B service; it’s a truly unique business that thrives on building relationships and supporting the wider community and charitable causes. Our network has grown through events like Ground Up Coffee entrepreneurs meeting on the first Monday of the month and the support of the Rye Chamber of Commerce.

The year has also seen long journeys to Wales and Norfolk for local residents, ensuring wheelchair users can safely and comfortably enjoy their holidays. Additionally, I’ve taken long distances to Disneyland Paris as part of a voluntary trip with The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers. This trip allows children with terminal and life-limiting illnesses to have a weekend of fun with their families and friends.

The Rye Chauffeur has catered to a diverse clientele, including wedding couples who chose us for their inaugural journey and Chelsea Pensioners, who always receive complimentary rides. These pensioners are brimming with character, charm and a wealth of life stories. We’ve also made TV appearances, most recently on the Vinnie Jones in the Country documentary, which raised awareness and support for the Children’s Magical Taxi Tour.

Locally, I’ve enjoyed being involved with the community and building connections through various activities. In February, I used my experience and qualifications to deliver free defibrillator and CPR training to residents and businesses alongside the Rother Responders. Thanks to them, I now carry a defibrillator permanently in the taxi, ready to respond to any nearby cardiac arrest. As a taxi driver with extensive local knowledge of the roads and hidden gems, and years of first aid experience, I feel it’s my duty to serve the town in every way possible. It’s especially important for Rye taxi drivers, particularly those using the rank at the station, to be prepared for emergencies. The rank conveniently sits between two public access defibrillators: one at the Cinque Ports pub and the other at the train station.

The year ahead is packed with exciting events. We’re already booked for more wedding days, anniversary celebrations, vineyard tours and journeys to and from the airports. Some reservations even extend as far as 2027!

The Rye Chauffeur can be hailed on the street or booked in advance for all local trips and further afield journeys. Follow our social media channels for the latest recommendations on where to eat, stay and enjoy Rye events.
