Roll up, roll up! ….

Rye Bowls Club launched its second independent year, with the first Open Day of the season, last Sunday 26 April.

Attended by close to 60 people, it was encouraging to see a lot of new faces eager to give it a try. All of the “rinks” on the beautifully manicured green were in use, over the afternoon, by those trying out this sport growing in popularity.

As always teas and cake were a popular interlude, between play and our wonderful catering team came up trumps, as usual.

Many of you will recall that this club was nearly lost to the community, two years ago, but through the efforts a handful of “old” club members and a wonderful intake of new enthusiastic members getting to grips with the self-management of the green and clubhouse, Rye Bowls Club has been revitalised. Similarly we received lots of local support, for which we thank you Rye.

The winter project, to restore the ditch around the green, has been supplemented by a repainting of the clubhouse, with help from Balfour Beatty volunteers.

Our new club ethos is not simply to play matches, but rather to encourage newcomers to start, simply playing for fun. If you just want to come along occasionally, that’s fine! You may only want to join as a Social Member, which is a great way to support this local club.

The Open Day was the first of many opportunities for prospective members to come and try out this sport. Now that the season has started there are several “roll-up” sessions each week, when members, and those wanting to “have a go”, come along for an informal game. These are held on Monday from 12pm to 2pm, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 12pm and Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm. Each of these are subject to there NOT being a club match or special event, on the home green that day. To check availability, please give us a call, and we can provide bowls to get you started.
