The second Rye Disability Awareness day is taking place on Saturday 20 June, organised by the new Rye Disability Action Group.
After a successful event last year, new drop kerbs were installed in the High Street, and a new disability section was created on The Rye Good Time app to help disabled people locate accessible shops, parking and other local facilities.
“The event this year will again start at Tilling Green Community Centre at 10am,” said organiser Dan Lake. “For the first part we want people to walk or wheel to Rye Bowls Club via the High Street, concentrating on footpaths and anything else the attendees themselves struggle with, along with anything they think could cause a problem for disabled people. The second part is a bit of fun to celebrate some of the accessible shops and facilities Rye has to offer. Attendees will be given ten clues to locations where they will find a letter and then have to guess the word from the letters.”
It’s a day for everyone he said, “If you are a wheelchair or mobility scooter user, have difficulties with mobility, hidden disabilities, are a pram user or are not disabled and would just like to view Rye’s accessibility issues from another perspective, then please come along.”
The event will finish at Rye Bowls Club. The club has become one of the most disabled-friendly places to visit in Rye, even creating a pitch specifically for disabled people to learn and enjoy the game. On arrival there will be refreshments and a raffle. There will also be free bowls taster sessions with members of the bowls club.
