A Scout finishing a Rubik’s Cube whilst hula hooping was the stand out act at Rye’s Got Talent on Friday, June 13. Youngsters of all ages took part in the evening of music and laughs, organised by 1st Rye Scouts.
Anthony got the biggest cheer of the night as he completed the puzzle, the tension mounting as the minutes ticked by. Was he going to drop the hoop? Would all the colour’s match up? Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Squirrels all leaned in, along with friends and family, wishing him on. Never in any doubt!

There was singing, joke telling, a memorable guitar performance of Sgt Pepper, and a violin solo – well done Joshua! Plus a group singalong wishing Happy Birthday to 9-year-old Charlie.

Rye mayor, Andy Stuart, was one of the judges. “It’s been a fantastic evening full of variety. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves. They’re a credit to Rye and proof you can do anything if you want to.”

Earlier in the evening Rye Group Scout Leader, Jane Nash, thanked the club’s supporters at the Scout Hut, encouraging more people to join her team. “It’s such a rewarding thing to be involved in. Scouting is about new friendships, gaining valuable skills for life and having unforgettable adventures.”
Tributes were also paid to her predecessor, Bill Perfitt, who has just stood down as Group Scout Leader in Rye – although he will be staying on to look after Rye Beavers. Andy Bishop, the Lead Volunteer for Hastings and Rother Scouts praised Bill’s 27-year support for 1st Rye Scouts. “He was worked tirelessly, raising funds for the new hut and grounds. His dedication has really made a difference to the children here.”

Receiving a second Award for Merit from the Chief Scout, Bill Perfitt said how much being involved in 1st Rye Scouts had helped him too. “Being a Scout Leader has improved my confidence hugely. I can do anything in my Scout uniform. I’m so flattered by this award.”
