The sun shone and the public came in their droves. The show is always popular and this was a record year.

It was Senlac St Leonards Rotary’s 30th anniversary classic car show, held at Rye Rugby Club on Sunday, June 15.

Dave Miles, organiser extraordinaire said: “The show was a great success with a record number of cars attending. Among the 255 cars on show were several cars from the 1920s right through to the early 2000s. These were supported by around forty craft and charity stalls which the punters enjoyed visiting throughout the event.

“A record number of the public came out and supported us for which we thank them, and not only did they have the cars, children rides and crafts to enjoy but we were very privileged to enjoy a Spitfire flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.”

Cllr Andy Stuart, mayor of Rye was introduced by Dave Miles from Senlac St Leonards Rotary who was going the open the show but passed on the honour to Paul Goring, Rye’s town crier, who opened the show to the delight of the crowd.

Those attending were then entertained by the Rye Ukulele Band; Rye Harbour Herrings, a local shanty group from Rye Harbour which has been gaining a following since its appearance on the Mary Berry Christmas Show; Rye Racketeers, a collective of musicians who have come together to form a band after dusting off their little used instruments; and finishing off with Gold Leader, a musical trio led by Andy Nunn.

David continued: “Proceeds from the show will be donated to Rye & District Community Transport, Warming up the Homeless and Senlac St Leonards own Yellowmen. The Yellowmen of Kadongdong are local Rotarians and their friends from the Hastings and Rother area who work in Northern Kenya to build or refurbish clinics and schools. They also help to develop the medical and educational services in the area. Other Rotary charities and good causes will also benefit.”

“We would like to thank our sponsor the Mermaid Inn as well as all our other advertisers and Rye Rugby Club for allowing us to hold our show at their ground.

“We haven’t a final total yet of money raised but we will let Rye News know as soon as it is available.”

I was lucky enough to have three extra photographers capturing the day at the Rugby Club: Charlie Gould, Jeff Grice and Tony Ham, so enjoy all the photos (see article in this issue Young Photographers in the Making).
