Rye 1st XI v Hastings Priory 2nd XI

The 1st XI moved into 4th position in Division 3 East of the 1st Central Sussex Cricket League after a convincing 114 run victory over Hastings Priory 2s in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. Skipper and Rye Concepts MOM Harry Smeed led from the front with an explosive 132, 19 fours and 4 sixes, including one which embedded in the pavilion roof. Contributions of 44 by Luke Payton and 30 no by Dan Seabrook saw Rye to 277-5 in 45 overs.

Rye left no bowling error unpunished

In reply Priory 2s were positive through Perera 76, as he struck boundaries off Rye’s opening attack. Priory raced to 100-2 off 20 overs. Perera was struck by heat exhaustion, and retired, but during his absence, the spin twins, Ben Clifton 4-4 and Harry Smeed 3-21 ensured Rye got maximum points, as they ran through the middle order and tail, and the returning Perera.

Rye 2nd XI v Willingdon 1st XI

The 2nds bowled well again at Willingdon 1sts, dismissing them for 155. All season long Rye have bowled teams out, with wickets shared around with Spencer Sharkey, Jack Keen, Fin Thomson and Mark Cook with 2 apiece. However Rye collapsed to 92 all out. Another recurring feature of this season, with no real reason, as the ability is clearly there.

Only Rowan Sharkey (30) and Harry Rhys Jones (31) contributed, as 6 batsmen failed to register a run, in a real duck fest. At the halfway point in the season Rye are near the bottom of Division 6 East, but with the talent available will be looking to push on for the second half of the season.

Rye 3rd XI v Willingdon 3rd XI

Rye third team travelled to Jevington for their latest league fixture against Willingdon thirds and on a hot afternoon were asked to field first.

Rye got off to a positive start claiming the first wicket of Calvin Fu (10) with the score on 22 through the bowling of David Jempson (1-28). This bought father and son together to join in a second wicket partnership of 108 before the introduction of James Jury (1-33) saw the dismissal of Martin Scott (36) in his first over. From this point onwards wickets continued to fall at more regular intervals with Mike Stoneham finishing with figures of 5-23 from 9 overs which included opening batsmen Reuben Scott who had scored 79. The other Rye wicket taker was Beth Farrow (1-30 from 9 overs) as she dismissed Peter Goad (18) with Willingdon finishing on 194-9.

After tea Willingdon made a quick start removing two wickets reducing Rye to 14-2 before Stuart Baker and George Jempson steadied the innings with a third wicket partnership of 39 before the former was dismissed for 17 by Peter Goad (1-25). James Jury joined George Jempson as both looked to push the score along and increase the chances of Rye chasing down their target, this was before Jury was run out having scored 36 with the score 145-5.

George Jempson became Willingdon’s last wicket with the score on 173-8 having scored his maiden half century as he was dismissed by Martin Scott (1-22) having scored 52. Rye finished on 183-8 with Alvin Manoj (1-51), Benjamin Rogers (2-38) and Caleb Scott (1-37) being the other wicket takers.

Next Saturday Rye 1st XI host Portslade 1st XI in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, the 2nd XI travel to Fletching 1st XI and the Thirds travel to play Seaford 4ths. This evening Rye hosts its Annual Bat & Trap Event, with all invited to join in, 7pm-9pm following the Soft Ball Practice, and with a BBQ and Bar.

The Colts last week saw losses by the U13s and U11s to their opponents from Mersham. This week the U11s travel to Tenterden on Monday, and the U13s host Mersham B U13s on Thursday.
