Rye Harbour are petanque champs

The Tuesday Petanque League Pairs Competition was held at the William the Conqueror pub, Rye Harbour.

Defending champions Joe Phillips and Damo Pearson from Pub 31, Winchelsea Beach, won their two matches in the primary rounds without conceding a point but, in the quarter finals, drew their team mates Kevin Earl and Tom Miller who beat them 11-9. Then in the semi-final EarlĀ & MillerĀ lost 11-0 to Brendon Doughty and Jacob Bourne from the Cock Inn, Peasmarsh .

In the second semi-final, Charlie and Dan of the Rose and Crown, Old Romney, lost to Alan Pawson and Freddie Clark from the Rye Harbour Social Club, who went on to defeat the Cock Inn and win the final.

It was nice to see some young players out-play older experienced players to reach the finals.

Top of the Tuesday A league is the Rose and Crown, Old Romney, and in second place, having won all their matches and having one match in hand, is Tenterden Club A.

The Warren Inn, New Romney, are top of the B league with a hundred percent record, 4 points clear of second place Varne Boat Club, Greatstone.

With an 11 point lead, the White Hart, Newenden, sits top of the C league. Rye Harbour Social Club A are their nearest rivals in second place.

D league is headed by Two Sawyers B, Pett, and in joint second place are Pub 31, Winchelsea Beach and Millers Arms, Ore.

At the end of each match the teams play a beer game, after which the losers buy the winners a beer.

Tenterden Club A has won 7, the White Dog, Ewhurst Green and the William the Conqueror have won 6. You don’t want to be a loser at petanque.
