The Sydney Allnutt Pavilion

Last week (June 5), we covered the difficulties that the Cricket Club are having in obtaining permission for the full use of their pavilion. We took a wide view of the origins of their difficulties and commented on other areas where we felt that Rother District Council had failed their constituents.

The Cricket Club have taken a rather more generous view and their hon. secretary, Martin Blincow, has written to Rye News as follows:

“Recently in both the letters page and the sports pages the Sidney Allnutt pavilion has been the subject of both reporting and comment, as Rye Cricket sought to secure a lease on the pavilion, plans which have been halted due to building regulations issues.

“On behalf of Rye Cricket Club we would like to express our thanks to Rother District Council for the support they have offered during this process. Both Rother DC and Rye Cricket Club find themselves in this position as a result of the legacy of the previous owners.

“Both parties have met and agreed a way forward for which Rye Cricket Club are grateful. There still remain obstacles, but both parties are working together to ensure that cricket can continue on The Rye Cricket Salts, and that the rich tradition of cricket in the town is not lost.

“Yours faithfully

Martin Blincow Hon Sec Rye CC”

We applaud the efforts both sides are making to resolve the problems and while we retain the view that the cause of these problems was not entirely one-sided, Rye News wishes both parties well in their ongoing discussions. We are sure that the evident good will being shown will result in this very fine pavilion returning to full use before long.
