A week of Tuesday Painters

The Tuesday Painters Club of Rye is looking forward to its 53rd Annual Exhibition of Paintings at St Mary’s Centre, in Lion Street. The local club of amateur artists has enjoyed many successful exhibitions over the years, being in a central position in town and always held in August when Rye is buzzing with visitors .  Although membership is down on previous years, it is anticipated that about 200  paintings will be entered  and hung.  Last year, during the 11 days of the exhibition  there were over 1200 visitors through the door which was double on the previous year (when so much building work was going on outside the Hall).

The Exhibition will open to the general public at  2pm on Friday August 19 and then daily from 10 am to 6pm (including Sunday) to Bank Holiday Monday August 29. As usual there will be a preview in the morning of the  August 19 for invited guests.

This year we are hoping to include some unframed paintings, to be displayed in a browser – so there will be more for our visitors to see.

Report on the Club’s year

The Club has generally had a good year.   Last year’s experiment of holding tutored workshops at the Rye Creative Centre, New Road, was a great success, so two more workshops were held this year, tutored by Mike Funnell, and Juliette Dodd, (known primarily as a portrait artist but tutoring a still life painting).

We have had some excellent speakers, arranged by Speakers’ Secretary, Eileen Rison, including the two artists mentioned above, who gave a talk as an introduction to the forthcoming workshops. We also had a most interesting talk from Andy Wood, (President of the Royal Institute of Water Colour Painters) entitled:  “The beginning of the use of water colour”, which was followed by a demonstration of how it has been used over the years. In May, we were reminded of the importance of drawing from Luke Hannan who gave a talk on “Understanding your drawing as starting points for paintings”.

The outdoor painting has been a non event this year. Either the weather has been too hot, or too wet, or we have all been extra busy with our overgrown gardens as a result of these extremes!

Applications for membership would be very welcome!  We are a friendly group of people and have talks and demonstrations six times a year, painting workshops, and there’s a chance to exhibit your paintings once a year. For further information contact Rosemary Frost (Tel:  01424 814283).
