Jaeger, Mint Velvet, Nicole Fahri, Jacques Vert, Esprit – just some of the designers featured in the Posh Jumble at Rye Community Centre on Saturday, June 21. The sale, which also included books and toys, was in aid of Sussex Greenways who are trying improve cycle routes in Rye. £1,047 was raised.
“There is all good quality items which people are really enjoying,” said Sally Abel, one of the people showcasing the designer clothes and dressed very appropriately. “This is the future – repurposing quality items.”
Organiser Nick Hanna, fresh from touring Rye with his megaphone to drum up trade, said the event aimed to raise funds for a new cycle route. “We are trying to create a walking, wheeling, cycling route around Rye to give local tourism a boost and help everybody get a chance to enjoy our wonderful countryside and heritage.”
He says repurposing old items for sale fits in with Sussex Greenways aims. “People have been so generous, donating some incredible stuff. Much better for the environment.”
Wendy Summers from Rye Bay E-Bikes was also selling items donated. “We want to improve mobility networks around Rye and the surrounding villages. A lot of people would like not to drive but don’t feel it’s safe enough.”
Having completed initial design studies for the routes, Sussex Greenways is now in discussions with local landowners and businesses about how to make it happen. Nick Hanna is also asking for help to fund more studies. “We’ve commissioned a survey of nearby water bodies for Great Crested Newts (just one of many ecology surveys which we need to do). This survey alone is costing £2,500 and we’re asking people to contribute to our Crowdfunder page.”
