The second week of the 55th annual Rye Arts Festival offers the choice over 30 high-quality events to enjoy.
Take music. Saturday 19 September sees the welcome return of the blues, country and Americana sounds of the ever popular and high energy Mountain Fireworks Company. And a week later, on 26 September, the African fusion music of Mampama is going to cook up a hot atmosphere at Rye Community Centre. Turning to classical, we have the Tongswood Chamber Choir singing British folk songs in St Mary’s church on Saturday 19 September, while on Sunday 20 September, the church will host a string orchestra who will play Poulenc’s Organ Concerto, with Martin Bruce pulling out all the stops on the organ!
Drama comes thick and fast with Gerard Logan providing a spooky Sunday afternoon performance on the 20th, reading spine-tingling ghost stories by EH Benson and MR James! The Priest’s Tale on Thursday 24 September is the story of a Catholic priest in Japan who was in Hiroshima when the first atomic bomb was dropped! Hayley-Marie Axe stars as Zelda Fitzgerald in the Last Flapper on Saturday 26th with two performances to choose from.
And the Books and Talks programme includes Catherine Kurtz talking about chocolate and giving a how-to-taste-it tutorial on Monday 19 September – what’s not to like about it? With which we turn to John Sweeney’s talk about The Real Nigel Farage on Saturday 26 September. Sweeney is a long-time critic of the political leader who has some very wealthy friends!
