After more than 25 years working internationally as a personal assistant at executive level, Rye resident Clare de Jersey has launched Help is on Hand, a service dedicated to supporting people over 60 who feel overwhelmed by modern technology, administrative tasks and the increasingly digital nature of everyday life.
“Why did I start this business? In two words: my parents,” explained Clare. “They were stuck. Before technology took over, they managed just fine. They went to the bank to handle transactions, filled out forms and posted them off, paid bills by cheque, phoned the surgery to make appointments and relaxed with regular TV and DVDs. Life worked.”
She says the world suddenly seemed to change for her parents. “Almost overnight, everything they once understood was replaced by technology they were never taught to use. Not because they were incapable, but because they were never brought up in that world. Watching them struggle, watching their confidence fade as everyday tasks became overwhelming, made me angry. It wasn’t fair.”
Giving people back their independence and confidence was also another reason for the new venture. “An entire generation has been left behind in the rush for efficiency, profit and cost-cutting by businesses and government bodies. They were expected to adapt, yet given no education, no guidance and no support to help them transition into a digital-first society. And they are paying the price for it every single day. I’m determined to be part of the solution.”
Clare’s career has been built on organisation, discretion and adaptability. She has managed complex travel itineraries across multiple time zones, set up home offices and overseas residences, coordinated extensive correspondence and ensured every technical and logistical detail was executed with precision.
She is also a qualified Montessori teacher and says she has always had a passion for supporting other people. “Whether professionally or personally, helping people feel confident and capable is deeply fulfilling to me.”
