From being ditched to creating a new ditch

The word “ditch” doesn’t conjure up much, other than a muddy depression alongside a field. However, to your rejuvenated lawn bowls club, the “ditch” is the important zone surrounding the green. Its purpose is to capture expensive bowls that overshoot the green and preserve them from damage.

As we’ve previously mentioned, Rye Bowls Club (RBC) is proud of its position on The Salts. We are well aware of the situation, being overlooked by our many Rye visitors, from The Lookout. We therefore spend many hours keeping the green looking pristine, but the view has been slightly tarnished by the lack of upkeep of the “ditch”, by those previously responsible.

With this all in mind the club has undertaken a complete refurbishment of the “ditch”. Funding from The Wind Farm Trust, the Community Fund and RBC’s reserves have been used to finance the materials, with club members pitching in to do the extensive works.

As you peep over The Lookout next time, please note the new “ditch” and, like our members, take pride in your town and its wonderful situation. Even better, why not come and join us, as a player (scratch beginners welcome), or just as a social member.
