Discovery Centre blends art & nature

A fantastic time was had by all at Rye Harbour Discovery Centre on Tuesday May 26, over 40 children and their families enjoying our free, half-term, drop-in nature crafts session.

Art and nature have a quiet way of nurturing children and adults. Together, they unite curiosity and imagination, giving time to notice beauty in small things, and to see the world not just as it is, but as it could be.

The children created sun prints using natural shapes, designed badges and keyrings, contributed to drawing a wildlife-themed birthday card for David Attenborough, painted colourful card birds, whittled wooden sticks and made wood and clay mushrooms.

On Monday, another 50 children and their families visited the Discovery Centre’s Microscope Monday drop-in session. They viewed lots of fascinating objects through the microscopes and desktop magnifier, including fur, feathers, egg cases, insects and shells.

The events team commented, “Thank you to all the families that joined the sessions and engaged with nature on our reserve. Huge thanks, too, to our fabulous volunteers who kindly supported Aimi, our Wilder Learning and Communities Officer, in organising these events. Everyone said as they left what fun they had had. To see the joy on children’s faces as they were being creative was brilliant.”
