This year’s National Allotments Week (10–16 August), organised by The National Allotment Society, celebrates the theme Grow to Learn. It recognises that allotments are about much more than growing fruit and vegetables. They are places where people learn practical skills, discover the value of patience and resilience, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, and build friendships by sharing knowledge and experience.
Here in Rye, this is particularly relevant. The town is fortunate to have two thriving allotment sites at Love Lane and South Undercliff, both owned by Rye Town Council and protected through the Rye Neighbourhood Plan. Better still, a small number of plots are currently available for anyone interested in discovering the rewards of growing their own food.

Allotments welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. They offer a chance to spend time outdoors, grow fresh produce, support wildlife and become part of a friendly community. The lessons learned on an allotment are perhaps more important than ever as gardeners adapt to increasingly hot and dry summers, sharing ideas and helping one another through the challenges of each growing season.
As our towns and cities continue to expand, protecting allotments is increasingly important. These valuable green spaces benefit not only those who cultivate them but also the wider community and local wildlife. Rye is fortunate that both of its allotment sites have long-term protection, helping to ensure they can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Anyone interested in finding out more is invited to visit the Rye Allotments Society Open Gardens at South Undercliff on Monday 31 August, from 11am to 12 noon. The event offers an opportunity to look around the site, meet existing plot holders and discover what allotment gardening is really like in a relaxed and friendly setting.
Those interested in taking on a plot can find more information through Rye Town Council’s allotments page or email ryeallotsoc@gmail.com for an informal chat.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or have never grown anything before, National Allotments Week is the perfect time to discover what you can grow – and what you can learn – on a Rye allotment.
