No, it’s not, but Rye is getting its very own fruit machine, aka a one-armed bandit, aka a slot machine.
This one is definitely a fruit machine though, and a fruit machine with a difference: instead of mechanical spinning reels, it is super-sized to fit humans in it!
Yes, you read that right. Due to premiere at the Harvest Hoedown, taking place this Saturday 12 September, at Rye Community Centre, Rye’s very own human fruit machine will be put through its paces, with a range of prizes, generously donated by local businesses, for matching the fruits. The fruits will be randomly (and independently) selected by the aforementioned humans.
The locally hand-made fruit machine is a wooden structure, which really has been a community effort to make. The materials were kindly supplied by Alsford Timber and it was carefully constructed, at no charge, by Tollets Builders. The paint was donated by Rye DIY, Care Signs did the lettering, and with the decorative finish undertaken by local artists – you can see it looks amazing.
Jane Brook, who put the concept together said, “It really is just a fun, fundraising asset, for any volunteer-led organisation or charity to put to good use. Although quite large, it has been designed to be easily dismantled for storage. It will live at the community centre, and it is hoped that it can be used at a variety of events.”
To be amongst the first to play the human fruit machine, you’ll need to come along to the Harvest Hoedown. Tickets are still available from www.wineandfoodfair.events and there will be some on the door.
So, grab your best dungarees and come along, to party the night away, to the brilliant Cut A Shine. Yee-Ha!
