Beavering away at harbour

On Monday, June 6 at RNLI Rye Harbour we had a visit from the 1st Rye Beaver Scouts, part of the 1st Rye Scout group. They came with their group scout leader, known to the beavers as Willow, and his wife as his assistant, known as Cherry. They were so well behaved and interested in all the things they saw and learned. They broke up into two groups and took turns to be told all about the Atlantic 85 and the tractor which, in the words of one of the beavers “…is humongous and I am not even as tall as one of the wheels.”

There was a great turnout of the crew who spent quality time with the beavers, encouraging them to ask questions. The children are perhaps potential future crew for the RNLI and capturing their interest early is so important. They watched the boat launch, saw a dummy being rescued from the river and then had a classroom session in the crew room. They were preparing for their safety activity badge so we showed them how to keep safe at the beach and in a harbour and what things to look out for. They also learned how to float to live which has saved many lives and helps people panic less in the water when in difficulty. As they left the boathouse many children said that it had been an amazing night.
