In a whirl with the Wurlitzer

An evening at the Rye Wurlitzer Academy is always a great night out, but last Friday night’s (March 4) Jazz Supper was a really special treat.

National treasure Liane Carroll, the internationally acclaimed award winning jazz vocalist and pianist extraordinaire, accompanied by Russell Field, a truly international drummer to the stars, gave us a wonderful and varied programme, with lots of entertaining banter in between.

Particularly interesting was her chat with new pupil Jimmy, a year 7 student who was thoroughly enjoying his Wurlitzer course.

The icing on the cake was, as always, the talented and charismatic BBC radio organist Michael Wooldridge, and the items they all played altogether delighted the audience of all ages, from around 8 to 88.

During the interval an excellent ploughman’s supper with homemade cakes was served in record time, before the drawing of the raffle, featuring a record amount of prizes, all including jars of the famous chutney, made by the grand master for the evening, Richard Moore.

Richard thanked all those who had contributed to the success of the evening, but regular Rye audiences at RWA know that his own tireless efforts and commitment to RWA know no bounds and his contribution to the entertainment was, as always, a joy and delight.

The next fund raising event for RWA is on Friday May 6 at Rye College when  a Los Angeles based Theatre Organist makes a welcome return to Rye, along with our very own Michael Wooldridge on the Rye Wurlitzer, who combine their talents with an evening of Sinatra and Swing.

The young students of the Adapt Theatre will be providing the vocals and popular melodies of the era.

Tickets can be reserved by phoning 01424 444058. The cost is £10 which  includes a pizza supper and tea or coffee
