Last Friday saw “Rye’s Got Talent” hit the Milligan Theatre with what can only be described as a versatile revue of music, singing and dance. People of all ages competed for the coveted prize – to perform at the celebrations on the “Christmas in Rye” day itself, December 12. The acts ranged from musical renditions and campfire songs to ballet, duets and protest songs.
Hosted by a certain local bearded drag lady (moi, moi), there were ten entrants in the end whom I have to say were terrifically professional at keeping themselves together backstage. There was no giddiness or diva tantrums. Instead, backstage it was all comparing notes and talking about where their ideas came from.
The judges, theatre professional Paul Baker, vocal coach Christine Descher and scenic designer Gareth McCully were brilliant, encouraging and honest. They had a hard time narrowing it down to the final four, before it was put to the audience to find the winner.
The runners up were drag act Harley Quin, contemporary dancer Hettie Rankin, and musician and singer Holly Fraser. But the winning act was Sara Tunbridge, who is only seven years old. She will be a highlight on December 12.
The evening raised £768, which is great starting point for the coming years and what is hoped will become an annual fixture in the Rye calendar.
